Whether you hate or love the holiday, single or in a relationship use it as an excuse to appreciate yourself.
I don’t care much about Valentine’s day. It makes no difference to me whether or not I’m in a relationship with another person when the 14th rolls around because no matter who I am with, where I am, what day it is, or what I’m doing, the most important relationship I have is with myself. That being said many people can find Valentine’s Day a rather cruel , especially for single people who long for love – as on every level it is about love. Many are frantically trying to figure out how they can express their love for their significant other, while others are trying to find a way to avoid the hearts- and love-filled holiday altogether.
I am a romantic but I am not the biggest fan of Valentine’s Day for one simple reason: It is a day where the whole world wants to know “What did you get for/from your partner?” I don’t think all the romance of a year should be attached on one day. If you truly love someone, shouldn’t you already be showing them how much you care every other day of the year? And since when did a giant stuffed bear or a box of chocolates become synonymous with love? As far as I’m concerned, I really don’t need a designated day for it. No one day should control your happiness or your romance. You will be the same you, have the same value, the same appreciation for things on February 15 as you did on February 13, so why should February 14 be different, wheater your single or coupled up.
When you’re happily spending lots of your time with another person, it’s easy to forget that you should also be spending time with yourself. Alone. And not just treating yourself, but really thinking about who you are and what you want. Give yourself the break you deserve and judge yourself not on the one day of the year the calendar says “today is for lovers”—instead, remember that every day you need to love yourself.
Remember Valentine’s Day is a made-up holiday so making up your own traditions is a great way to celebrate and treat this Valentine’s Day as an opportunity to woo yourself. You may find that your most loyal companion lies within you. Embrace falling “Madly in Love with YOU.” Be your own Valentine.
